Frontend Design

Introduction

The Frontend Design skill empowers Claude to move beyond generic, cookie-cutter web interfaces and deliver production-grade, high-fidelity frontend code. While standard AI outputs often converge on a “safe” aesthetic (like Inter font and purple-on-white gradients), this skill prioritizes design intentionality and bold creative choices.

Whether you are building complex React components, high-converting landing pages, or experimental web posters, this skill ensures your project stands out. It focuses on:

  • Anti-Generic Aesthetics: Actively avoids “AI slop” by selecting unique typography and unconventional layouts.
  • Design Thinking: Analyzes the purpose and audience before writing a single line of code.
  • Technical Precision: Delivers clean, functional code in frameworks like React, Vue, or vanilla HTML/CSS.
  • Visual Polish: Incorporates advanced CSS techniques, motion libraries, and atmospheric textures.

Installation

To add the Frontend Design skill to your Claude Code environment, use the following command:

claude skill add anthropics/skills/frontend-design

Note: Ensure you have the latest version of the Claude CLI installed to support advanced design artifact rendering.

Usage

This skill is automatically triggered when you ask Claude to build, style, or “beautify” a web interface. To get the most out of it, provide context regarding the tone or aesthetic direction you desire.

Example Prompts

Building a Portfolio:

“Build a portfolio landing page for a creative developer using a brutalist aesthetic. Use high-contrast typography, grid-breaking elements, and a grain overlay texture.”

Creating a Dashboard:

“Create a financial dashboard component in React. I want a luxury/refined tone—minimalist, generous negative space, and a sophisticated serif font for headings.”

Styling an Existing Component:

“Take this login form and beautify it. Avoid generic styles; try something retro-futuristic with neon accents and subtle CSS motion effects on hover.”

Key Design Pillars

To ensure every interface is unforgettable, the Frontend Design skill adheres to these core principles:

  • Typography: Rejects system fonts (Arial, Inter) in favor of characterful, distinctive font pairings that define the interface’s personality.
  • Spatial Composition: Utilizes asymmetry, diagonal flows, and controlled density to create visual interest.
  • Motion & Interaction: Prioritizes high-impact moments like staggered reveals and surprise hover states using CSS or the Motion library.
  • Visual Depth: Moves beyond solid backgrounds by implementing gradient meshes, noise textures, and layered transparencies.

Pro Tip: When requesting a design, mention a specific “extreme” tone—such as maximalist chaos or industrial utilitarian—to help the skill commit to a bold, cohesive vision.
