Doc Co-Authoring Workflow

Introduction

The Doc Co-Authoring Workflow is a specialized skill designed to transform Claude into an active editorial partner. Instead of generating generic text from a single prompt, this skill guides you through a structured, professional writing process used by top-tier technical teams.

Writing high-stakes documentation like PRDs, RFCs, or technical specifications often fails because of “context gaps”—the AI doesn’t know what you know. This skill solves that by enforcing a rigorous three-stage process:

  • Context Gathering: Deep-dive sessions to extract project background, constraints, and stakeholder concerns.
  • Refinement & Structure: A section-by-section drafting process using iterative brainstorming and “surgical” edits.
  • Reader Testing: A unique validation phase where a “fresh” Claude instance (with no prior context) attempts to read your doc to identify blind spots.

Whether you are drafting a complex architectural decision doc or a simple project proposal, this workflow ensures your final output is clear, concise, and ready for its human audience.

Installation

To add the Doc Co-Authoring Workflow to your Claude Code environment, use the standard skill addition command:

Terminal window
claude skill add anthropics/skills/doc-coauthoring

If you are manually configuring your skills, ensure the SKILL.md content is accessible in your project’s .claude/skills/ directory.

Usage

This skill is automatically triggered when you mention documentation-related tasks. You can also manually invoke it with specific prompts.

Triggering the Skill

Simply tell Claude what you want to write:

  • “I need to draft a technical spec for our new API.”
  • “Help me write a PRD for the mobile app redesign.”
  • “Let’s create a decision doc for switching our database.”

The Three Stages

1. Context Gathering Claude will ask a series of meta-questions about your audience and impact. You can provide information via:

  • Direct Input: Shorthand notes or “info-dumps.”
  • Integrations: Link to Slack threads, Google Drive files, or Notion pages (if MCP connectors are enabled).
  • File Analysis: Point Claude to existing codebases or local files to extract technical context.

2. Refinement & Structure Claude creates a scaffold (using Artifacts or local Markdown files). You will work on one section at a time:

  • Brainstorming: Claude provides 5–20 options for what to include in a section.
  • Curation: You select what to keep or combine.
  • Surgical Edits: Instead of rewriting the whole doc, Claude uses str_replace to refine specific sentences based on your feedback.

3. Reader Testing Before finishing, Claude simulates a “cold reader.”

  • If using Claude Code, it invokes a sub-agent to ask: “Does this doc actually make sense without the background conversation?”
  • It identifies ambiguities, false assumptions, and internal contradictions.

Tips for Success

Tip: Don’t worry about organization during the Context Gathering stage. The “Info Dump” is designed for stream-of-consciousness input; Claude will handle the structuring later.

Note: If your document contains images, ask Claude to generate alt-text. This ensures that when others use AI to summarize your document later, the AI can “see” the visual context.

Best Practice: When refining sections, try to give specific feedback like “Make the third paragraph more concise” rather than editing the file yourself. This helps Claude learn your personal writing style for the remaining sections.
